About the Operating System Sucks-Rules-O-Meter

The Operating System Sucks-Rules-0-Meter ran from 1998 to 2011, using the AltaVista search engine. AltaVista has been shut down.

This operating system quality and approval metric is based on a periodic AltaVista search for each of several operating systems, directly followed by "sucks", "rules", or "rocks".

We search for all operating system names exactly as shown above, with the exceptions of Mac OS, Mac OS X, and VMS. For Mac OS, we add the search results for the incorrect but common spelling "MacOS". Because Mac OS X is sometimes abbreviated to simply "OS X", the Mac OS X search is just for "OS X" -- we have not found other instances of this term on the web, so we can use it without confusion. For VMS, we add the results for "OpenVMS". We do not search for any derogatory slang misspellings of any operating system name.

Sucks-Rules-O-Meter technology is used in this report for The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). (The views and conclusions contained in the document are those of the author and should not be interpreted as representing the official policies, either expressed or implied, of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency or the U.S. Government.)

Robert P. Munafo has written a comparison of 1998 and 2000 data from this meter.

Please read The Operating System Sucks-Rules-O-Meter FAQ before mailing us about this page.

This meter is no longer available as a GIF file because of the Unisys patent issue. GIFs suck anyway. Use PNGs.

Caution to Exuberant OS Advocates: Please don't risk your site's good standing with AltaVista just to improve your operating system's rating on this meter. When making "my OS rules, your OS sucks" statements on your site, please note this warning, which used to appear on AltaVista's "Adding a URL" page.

AltaVista is an index, not a repository for pages of low or misleading informational value. Attempts to fill it with misleading or promotional pages lowers the value of the index for everyone. Left unchecked, this behavior would make Web indexes worthless. We will disallow URL submissions from those who spam the index. In extreme cases, we will exclude all their pages from the index.

Your AltaVista listing is a privilege, not a right. (Speaking of abuse, never send any mail to the address aaronandmike@zgp.org because it feeds into an automated abuse reporting system. If you send mail to that address we will figure you're an abuser and block your future mail.)
